FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Weigh and Win “Spring into Action” Team Challenge

February 1 – April 30, 2015

DENVER, Jan. XX, 2015 – On Feb. 1, 2015, Coloradans will “Spring into Action” with the semiannual Weigh and Win Team Challenge. Teams comprised of four to eight people will compete across the state in two categories: average percentage of weight lost and HEALTHpoints accrued (earned for program participation).

All team members must weigh-in at least twice between Feb. 1 and April 30. The 2014 ‘Winter Weigh-Off’ Team Challenge consisted of 121 teams.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams in both categories, as will a $1,000 charitable donation to each winning team. Past recipients include American Cancer Society, Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Food Bank of the Rockies and Habitat for Humanity.

“I’m a single mom, I don’t have the money to donate myself,” said Weigh and Win 2014 ‘Winter Weigh-off’ Challenge winner Desiree Amaro. “Being able to make that big of a donation was sincerely rewarding.”

The average weight improvement for a successful Weigh and Win participant after one year in the program is 17.7 pounds or an 8 percent weight loss. For those who simply participate in the Team Challenge, the average weight lost is 16 percent more than a general Weigh and Win participant, while a Team Challenge captain loses an average of 26 percent more weight.

Normal incentives for weight loss apply.

“The Team Challenge is a great way to engage in the program while motivating your friends and family to join you,” said Lia Schoepke, Weigh and Win Program Manager. “The team-based structure provides extra motivation and the charitable donation adds an additional incentive.”

Participants must sign up for a free Weigh and Win account prior to joining the challenge. Create or join a team beginning Feb. 1, or any time after by visiting www.WeighandWin.com/TeamChallenge.

Accepting the Team Challenge: How to be Successful

We all know how hard it is to lose weight, especially when you feel you’re doing it all on your own. That is why the Team Challenge is a great tool to use! Research has found that having more social contacts when trying to lose weight is connected with greater weight loss intentions and success.  Here are five simple ways to make the most of the Team Challenge and how to use it your advantage to be successful.

1. Be Supportive and Utilize the Support

Everyone can feed off each other’s motivation in a team setting. I know there are some days when I just don’t feel like going to the gym, but when my friends invite me I don’t want to let them down.  If you having a rough day, call on one of your teammates to help you out and re-energize you. Make sure to reciprocate if someone else may be struggling. Together you can get through life’s ups and downs and still be successful!

2. Have a Good Attitude

Negative attitudes tend to be restrictive and make you feel like you’re trapped. Stay positive and your body will follow! The old saying of “I think I can” really can lead to reaching your goals. Remind yourself why you wanted to be healthier in the first place, whether it was for your health, for your family or just to look better in your old jeans. If you remember your goals and stay positive, you can achieve anything your mind wants to.

3. Keep Communicating

Try to touch base with your teammates at least once a week to stay on track with your group goals and expectations. By touching base with everyone weekly, it may remind someone that they really do have a great support system helping them out! If your teammates are close and looking for some fun team bonding, try getting together for a weekly workout or healthy lunch!

4. Be Accountable

Your teammates are all counting on you to help them out as much as you are depending on them! So make sure you’re checking in and motivating everyone as best you can so everyone is doing their part! Also, don’t forget to do your two required weigh-ins to be eligible for the team prizes!

5. Have Fun!

When you’re truly having fun, you sometimes forget how hard you are working. Send each other funny fitness or nutrition pictures, get together to play an active group game or order group t-shirts that you can show off at work or in the gym. Feed off of the excitement of the challenge and enjoy yourself!

The next team challenge starts August 1. For more information on how the team challenge works:

How the Team Challenge Can Help You Succeed

Participants who join the team challenge are more successful in weight loss than participants who do not join. Read this blog post for more interesting statistics on how competition can help you achieve your health goals.

Our next team challenge is starting in just two weeks on August 1. Learn how Weigh and Win and the Team Challenge helped ‘The Freedom Fat Fighters’ take control of their health, losing 117 lbs or a 12.15% weight improvement in the Winter 2014 Team Challenge.

Are you up for the challenge this year?

Does being social help you lose more weight?

One of the questions we often receive here at Weigh and Win is “What’s the secret to losing weight, and keeping it off?”

Of course the simple answer is HEAL: Healthy Eating and Active Living!  If you can find ways to eat better (my most effective thing is to remember to control my portion sizes) and move  your body more (take the stairs!) you should start to see changes in your energy level and your health.  But if you’re looking for additional ways to stack the odds in your favor, then read on.

After analyzing the performance of thousands of participants in the Weigh and Win program, we recently noticed that people using our team challenges tend to lose more weight.  And those that decide to be the captain of a team have even more success.

Why is this happening?  One theory is that the very act of promising to your friends that you’re going to try to get in shape increases your commitment to change.  This “social contract” with your family and friends provides a bit more motivation to put down that donut and pick up an apple.  And if you take on the role of team captain and organizer, then you’re given an extra helping of social accountability.  Everyone is watching!

Team challenges aren’t for everyone.  But if you don’t mind a little fun and competition with your weight loss journey, then you might want to give one of our team challenges a try! Our next team challenge starts August 2014.

Good luck!
