Healthy Behaviors Are Contagious

Weigh and Win participants who join the team challenge lose more weight over the course of a year than participants who do not join the challenge. Why do you think that is? Well, it turns out being healthy is something contagious you want to catch!

A study found that social networks largely influence weight. If your close social networks (friends, family) have unhealthy habits and are overweight or obese, you’re more likely to have these same unhealthy habits and weight. Conversely, if the people around you are healthy or working to develop healthier habits, you’re more likely to develop those habits and lose weight as well. The researcher in the study concluded that “people are connected, and so their health is connected.”

The team challenge is a great way to connect with the people in your life; friends, family and co-workers, and work together to develop healthy habits.

AS-A-TEAM-YOURE

Don’t take our word for it, here’s how the team challenge (and the support of their teammates) helped these Weigh and Win participants improve their health.

What People Are Saying

Coloradans are 200,000 Pounds Lighter Thanks to incentaHEALTH and Kaiser Permanente’s Weigh and Win

DENVER, July 14, 2015 – Colorado is getting healthier by the day with help from incentaHEALTH’s scientifically designed and technology-based weight loss program, Weigh and Win. As an incentivized and free resource, Weigh and Win has coached residents across the state to shed 200,000 pounds since 2011. In addition to the program’s push-based Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) coaching, participants of Weigh and Win have been paid $340,000 in cash rewards for their health improvements. The program is primarily funded by Kaiser Permanente.

“Weigh and Win provides a great program for community members and employers who are looking for fun and innovative ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight,” said Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Worksite Wellness Manager, Dan McKenna, MA. “Weigh and Win has been very well received here at CDPHE. Our community enjoys the easy access to kiosks, supportive and high quality coaching, tips and reminders.  This is an important program for Colorado as we strive to be the healthiest state in the nation.”

Achieving a healthy weight is a long-term challenge for millions of people. However, it can be the first step in preventing many life threatening ailments. Recent research suggests that a weight loss of 3-5 percent can reduce a person’s risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and the need for cholesterol and heart medications. To date, 47 percent of participants have achieved a 5 percent or more weight improvement and 60 percent of participants have achieved a 3 percent improvement. The average weight improvement for a successful Weigh and Win participant after one year in the program is 17.7 pounds or an 8 percent weight loss. The program has more than 63,000 participants.

Weigh and Win is offered for free to all Colorado residents 18 and older and provides tailored health coaching via text message and email. Participants receive fitness and nutrition plans, a weekly grocery list and unlimited access to health coaches over the phone or email. Cash incentives are provided for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater, as well as other prizes for those who begin the program with a healthy BMI.

Progress is tracked through quarterly weigh-ins at community kiosks. The kiosk measures weight, BMI and takes a full-length photograph – providing a visual progress report of participant weight improvement. See here for a full list of kiosk locations.

The ‘Let’s Get Healthy Colorado’ Fall Team Challenge will begin Aug. 1, 2015. Participants must sign up for a free Weigh and Win account prior to joining the challenge. Create or join a team beginning August 1 by visiting http://www.weighandwin.com/MyCoach/TeamChallengeInfo.aspx.

New participants can enroll online at http://weighandwin.com/ or at any of the 68 kiosks located throughout Colorado.

Celebrate National French Fry Day Guilt-Free

Guilt-Free-Fries-01

July 13 is National French Fry Day! French fries are a popular guilty pleasure, but the typical fast food fry is oil-laden and covered in salt resulting in a high-calorie, high-sodium item. Fear not, French fries don’t have to be the enemy anymore. By switching to a homemade version along with some other simple swaps, you can have fries that are actually nutritious! Celebrate National French Fry Day while still staying healthy.

Always Bake, Never Fry

Instead of frying potatoes in oil, opt for baking them with a drizzle of olive oil or even olive oil cooking spray. This will drastically cut down the fat content. To keep them nice and crispy turn them frequently. Make sure to cut the vegetables thin so they are fully cooked and less likely to be soft and soggy.

Replace the White Potato

Sweet potatoes are higher in nutrients like fiber and Vitamin A. There are a number of other vegetables that make great substitutions such as root vegetables. They have a surprisingly similar taste to the regular potato. Try butternut squash, parsnip, or even carrot fries for a boost of nutrition.

Spice Things Up

Salt isn’t the only spice that makes food taste good. Fries are a blank canvas looking for added flavor. Try baked butternut squash with Italian seasoning, garlic and pepper or carrots with chili powder and cumin for a new taste on the plain French fry. These spiced fries will taste so good you won’t even need to use ketchup, saving you calories and lowering your sugar intake.

Kick the Ketchup Habit

Ketchup might seem lighter in calories, but it is filled with sugar. On average, it is recommended that the maximum amount of sugar consumed in one day is between 25-35 grams. In one tablespoon of ketchup, there is four grams of sugar. An entire 20 ounce bottle of ketchup has 33 sugar cubes in it! Try making your own ketchup or using a no sugar alternative – mustard. Mustard has no added sugar and the varieties with mustard seeds are loaded with antioxidants.

Head on over our Pinterest page for a few healthy French fry alternatives:  https://www.pinterest.com/weighandwin/healthy-french-fries/

Making a Healthy Smoothie

Green smoothies are gaining popularity because of all the nutrition and hydration you can pack in a convenient glass on your way out the door in the morning. They are quick to make, clean up and you only need a blender to get started. Since nutritional deficiency has been proven to lead to chronic overeating and poor quality food choices, the green smoothie can be a game changer for those looking to effortlessly add more nutrition to their diet for weight improvement. A smoothie made with the right ingredients contains high amounts of water, fiber and protein so you feel as satisfied as you would normally after eating a meal. Below are some ingredients to consider adding to your smoothie and some ingredients to avoid.

smoothie steps-01
The BEST choice is to choose unsweetened options.

Water, coconut water, fat free or low fat cow’s milk, and unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk.

smoothie steps-02The BEST choice is to use raw, leafy green veggies.
Spinach, kale, romaine, bok choy, swiss chard, collards, dandelion, turnip greens, beet greens, carrots, avocados, cucumbers.

smoothie steps-03

The BEST choice is low sugar fresh or frozen fruits.
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and tangerines.

smoothie steps-04

The BEST choice is choosing a high protein ingredient.
Protein powders, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seed, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cayenne pepper), vanilla extract, acai powder, unsweetened cocoa powder and natural nut butters.

Once you added your ingredients, add a few ice cubes to your blender and then start blending until you have a smooth consistency. If you want your smoothie thicker, add more ice cubes. If you are using frozen fruits, you might not need any ice cubes at all. If you are getting chunks of ingredients after you mix up your smoothie, then you might want to consider upgrading your blender.

Stay away from ingredients like sugar-sweetened fruit juice or concentrate, sweetened or flavored yogurts, ice cream/sorbet, whipped cream or any kind of sugary candy. If you are trying to improve your weight, then I would also avoid high sugar fruits such as grapes, bananas, mangos, sweet cherries, apples, pineapples, pears and kiwi fruit.

Everyone’s tastes buds and nutritional needs are unique and there are a million different combinations of ingredients when it comes to green smoothies. Take time to experiment and find what combination works best for you (and your family) and then share your favorite RAWkstar recipe on our Weigh and Win Facebook page!
